FOSTER Arnold

FORMER ONGERUP COUPLE FIFTY YEARS MARRIED

Gnowangerup Star January 19, 1984

MANY thousands of kilometres were travelled by those who attended the recent celebration of the Golden Wedding of Mr & Mrs Arnold Foster of Watermans (formerly of Ongerup) at the Contacio Hotel international Scarborough

Grace Foster (nee Hart) came to Ongerup with her parents and family when they moved from Ballarat, Victoria in 1929.
On a hot February day in 1934, Grace had travelled to her wedding to Arnold Foster in the Morris car of the groom’s uncle, Sam Foster. The Reverend Joe Thompson was the minister at the wedding in the Methodist Church, Gnowangerup on St Valentine’s Day and the reception was held in the Memorial Hall.

The wedding cake was made and decorated by Mrs. Head. The bride‘s mother T.G. (Tom) Hart was best man Connie Hill chief bridesmaid and Betty Fletcher (nee Vaux) and Joanne Pitman (nee Fitter?) were junior bridesmaids.
Despite the Depression the newlyweds honeymooned in Perth and here they purchased bits and pieces for their new home ‘Belvedere" which Arnold had built on his Ongerup farm.

“Belvedere” was the name chosen by Grace after a country church in South Australia, where her mother and sister were confirmed.
Grace and Arnold farmed on their beloved ‘Belvedere” until 1961 when they retired to Perth.

To the joy of Grace and Arnold all five children of the Foster family were present at the Golden Wedding celebration -_Wendy and Bill Mansfield from Melbourne, Kerry and Barry Kerley from Sydney, Rick and Maxine Fister of Morawa, Peter and Cath Fister of Padbury and Thelma and Rob Winroe of Hamersley.
Others to have travelled long distances were the “bride’s" niece Pat with husband Bill Byrne of Melbourne.
The only original member present of the bridal party, apart from the bride and groom, was junior bridesmaid Betty Fletcher (nee Vaux) formerly of Ongerup

TOAST

“Digger" Weir proposed the only toast of the evening to the happy couple.
He spoke on the involvement of "Auntie Grace” (as she is affectionately known to all) in every activity that occurred in the small farming community of Ongerup where they lived for nearly 30 years
Grace Foster’s enthusiasm, organising ability and originality were continually evident community projects, sports activities, the school and the church,
Her resourcefulness was particularly evident during the Second World War when Arnold was away in the Army for several years.

Digger's words of appreciation made particular reference to cricket and tennis coaching. He remarked the best contribution Grace and Arnold had made was their example of family life which had spanned fifty but not always easy years. The complete family reunion, he said, what is its own testament.
Much to everyone’s delight and shades of former happy days at on group, close friend Mollie O’Neill sang “Come back to Sorrento” for Grace and “A Bachelor Gay” for Arnold. At the “bride’s” request, Kaye Vaux recited some poetry that they had both written many years ago about current events at the time.
After cutting of the cake junior bridesmaid, Betty Fletcher, did the honours and took the cake around. The cake had been made and iced by Mrs. Jane Watson, formally of Pine Grove with the assistance of Mrs. Eva Brown, formally of Needilup.
A warm, happy evening of renewed friendships concluded when the Golden couple left for destinations known.

Mrs. Foster wrote both the lyric and the score while she was a member of the Ongerup branch.
